Previous Minutes Minutes from the cluster day in June were accepted by the group. 2 Lexia Programme Jane from Lisneal kindly demonstrated the use of the Lexia programme used in Lisneal College. We saw the programme at level 2 (out of a possible 5 levels) from a childs perspective and then from a teachers perspective where childrens progress/difficulties could be easily identified. Alan offering the use of the Lexia programme to children in each of the primary schools and also extended an invitation for SENCOs to view the programme. Primary School Action Plan Beverly shared the information she received in reference to The Accelerated Reading Programme and it was determined that it would cost each school 1,000 to implement the programme for the incoming year~ Training and implementation (3 sessions on line and one face-to-face 6 hour session) 557.60 + Licence fee - 375 (inc 25 pupils) Cost per pupil afterwards 2.99. Bridie highlighted the importance of schools including the programme in School Development Plans and literacy plans as it should be considered as an integral strategy in planning for improvement in underachievement in boys in each school. Bridie and the primary schools agreed that the Accelerated Reading Programme would count as the programme outlined in DSD funding bid, as well as including incentives for improvement with the funding. If the group do decide to buy into the Accelerated Reading Programme it was decided that we would report on the progression of the selected underachieving boys at each cluster meeting. Primary schools meeting on Wednesday 5th October in Oakgrove Integrated PS @ 3:15pm to see the Accelerated Reading Programme in use. 4 Post Primary Action Plan Peter shared how he is using kindles and they have had a positive impact on scores and motivation. Peter contacted PC World who offered a possible leasing agreement which would include service guarantee but would mean the cluster would be tied into the agreement for 3 years. The cluster agreed that this would not be a viable investment. The possibility of investing in netbooks was deemed to be the most appropriate as children would have access to internet and MS Office applications as well as online reading. Beverly to email Post primary Schools with details of connecting netbooks to the network and with specifications of Androids in which Newbuildings have invested in. 5 Action For Children Rhonda shared an update of the summer support which was implemented and highlighted how there were trends in the 0-5 years and the youth groups needs. Action For Children supported 25 children during the summer, over a 6 week period. Rhonda shared evaluations from children and parents which were all very positive and illustrated how everyone was grateful for the service offered. Rhonda also highlighted how the groups were able to avail of the services provided by Derry City Council and commented on how useful this was. The group decided that the agenda for the cluster meeting in April would be to look at summer provision. Rhonda agreed to update the service directory and forward it on to the cluster who could include on their school websites. 6 Louise Allen Activ8 Teresa is pleased with the programme to date and mentioned that the children who are involved in the programme are all very keen. Lisneal are still interested in the programme and will avail of evening catch up sessions. Louise outlined the possibility of children linking in with coaches in schools as part of the ACTIV Communities or Goldmark initiatives. Positive Playgrounds Louise shared that the tendor has been selected and the programme will be implemented in the next 3 years on a rotational basis. Further details will be shared at a later date. 7 AOB The names of the boys that were being tracked as part of the underachievement in boys programme are to be passed on to relevant post primary schools. Lisneal to invoice Oakgrove College, Oakgrove IPS, Foyle & Londonderry College and Lisnagelvin for cluster monies. Bridie to contact Rhonda in regards to possible family support workers being employed through DSD funding throughout the city~ community to write the bids.
